On April 9, members of our Chapter, the SGA Baltic Student Chapter, and the SEG Student Chapter Freiberg began the Hungarian field trip at the G\u00e1nt bauxite deposit. Here, we were introduced to the regional geology of Hungary as well as the local geology of the deposit. Apart from the aluminium ore, we collected some high-quality UV-active gypsum crystals. The day continued at the Nagyb\u00f6rzs\u00f6ny ore district, a highly evolved hydrothermal system with unusual bismuth\u2013tellurium mineralisation, and concluded with panning almandine garnets from stream sediments.<\/p>\n\n\n

The second day included visits to the Fels\u0151pet\u00e9ny clay mine, known for its UV-active calcite\u2013aragonite veins, and the Salg\u00f3tarj\u00e1n K\u00e1roly Shaft coal waste heap, Hungary\u2019s most notable pyrometamorphic site and an example of combustion-related mineral formation. The final stop was the H\u00e1jna\u010dka locality in Slovakia, known for its sapphire occurrences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the third day, we visited an interesting Hg\u2013Sb mineralisation at Asztag-k\u0151, where we collected cinnabar and stibnite. Later, we collected UV-active hyalite at B\u00e1rdos Hill near Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6ssolymos before exploring the hydrothermally altered and oxidised mineralisations of the Par\u00e1df\u00fcrd\u0151 area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth day was spent at the mineralogical museum in Miskolc and the Hossz\u00fa Hill locality near Monok in the Tokaj region, where we searched for precious and fire opal specimens, as well as hyalite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fifth day focused on the Rudab\u00e1nya ore district, one of Central Europe\u2019s most mineralogically complex polymetallic systems. We first visited the local mining museum before heading into the field, where we learned about the deposit and its many hydrothermal events. We collected many mineral species, including native copper, azurite, malachite, cerussite, chalcocite, galena, and many secondary arsenic-bearing minerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final day included a visit to the altered zone of an epithermal deposit at Galambos Hill near M\u00e1d, where we collected alunite, scorodite, and bariopharmacosiderite. Lastly, we visited a perlite quarry and diatomite deposits in Erd\u0151b\u00e9nye, marking the end of the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
